Practical Resources ... Planning by Marian Durkin, CSA

How Do I Begin?—Tips for Starting a New Venture

  1. You will need some “start up funds.” Begin by writing a detailed proposal about your project with a start up budget in place. Get someone with a finance background to assist you with your budget.

  2. Do the necessary research to see what grant possibilities are available for your
    enterprise.

  3. Find a lawyer early on who may be willing to do some “pro bono” work for you:

    1. Get the name of your project approved by the State in which you are located.

    2. Draw up Code of Regulations and Articles of Incorporation for you.

  4. Where do you want your project located? This may take time so start early to contact landlords etc.

  5. Get a start up Board of Directors in place. This can be as few as three persons who will take an interest in your project and offer you the support you will need.

Of course, once your enterprise is up and running you will:

  1. Employ staff
  2. Establish a Board of Directors
  3. Begin exploring the possibilities for funding
  4. Get assistance with the PR work needed to get your enterprise in the public eye
